The first food critic to be award a Pulitzer Prize, Jonathan Gold is esteemed for his perception as a cultural observer as well as a culinary expert. Laura Gabbert’s “City of Gold” neatly echoes that appeal by amplifying its native Los Angeleno subject’s love of both gastronomic diversity and his wildly diverse hometown itself. You needn’t be previously knowledgable about either to be charmed by this ebullient documentary.
Gold is a “failed cellist,” a former L.A. Weekly proofreader and a music writer/editor who first seriously investigated his love of food with an epic quest to sample every eatery along 15-mile Pico Boulevard from downtown to Santa Monica. That alerted him to the intricacies of the sprawling megalopolis’ populations, where immigrant pockets can create a miniature “Tehrangeles” or a locus for specialties from a particular Mexican region.
Jonathan Gold is a genius and one of the best writers of modern america. This is a documentary no one should miss.
Chioco Design recently completed a new taco restaurant that pays homage to the colorful roadside buildings popular throughout the 1950s. While many restaurants aim to make their establishment appear completely modern, this diner combines retro elements with contemporary designs for a nostalgia-inducing experience.
The new branch of Torchy’s Tacos is located in Austin, Texas, and it sits on the old site of 1970s burger chain Fran’s Hamburgers. The new building boasts a retro exterior that is inspired by the roadside buildings and colorful signage popular during the 1950s. The restaurant’s unique zig-zag profile and distinctive red columns make the establishment eye-catching and inviting to those passing by. As a result, the combination of contemporary features and 1950s-inspired designs provides a whole new dining experience for guests.
The Taco’s ar so good that US-President Barack Obama couldn’t resist stopping by torches last week when he was in town for this years SXSW Festival. Do you need any more convincing to visit the coolest town west of New York City and wast of Los Angeles?
Distrikt Coffee is how every coffee shop should be. Not only is the coffee good but the food… just beyond this world and not only the breakfast – but especially the breakfast. A real competitor to the Wolseley in London but with the trendy flair of Berlin Mitte – close to Rosenthaler Platz. The indeed wonderfully fluffy plate of pancakes has the perfect balance – a nice touch of salt in the batter, with the freshness of yoghurt pairing well with the crunchy caramelized nuts, tart compote and the airy cakes – and best of all the lemon-lime butter is a dream come true. I wish I could go to Districk Coffee every day.
More and more people are switching to Japanese green tea and are giving coffee a miss. The trendiest one is matcha. Matcha is the powdered Japanese green tea used in the famous Japanese tea ceremony. It has a very ancient history since it was brought from China by the Zen monk Eisai. Matcha is obtained by stone-grinding a tea called tencha to produce a powder. Matcha Latte anyone?
In the cool neighborhoods of Berlin and London you can see green tea shops opening up left and right. One we really like is Mamecha in Berlin Mitte. Check it out.
Cupcakes is so yesterday – now it’s all about the doughnuts. Forget Krispy Kreme and Dunkin Donuts. The new gold standard is Crosstown Dougnuts. The London Donut-chain is baking some amazing sxxx.
Their dough is a unique hybrid recipe created by combining sourdough (levain) and fresh bakers’ yeast. They make a variety of these sourdough doughnuts, some of which are filled, glazed or mixed with Belgian chocolate. Seriously, yum.
Favourites include the chilli Belgian chocolate square doughnut – just sourdough with a chilli chocolate mousse injected, topped with a white chocolate glaze – the sea salt caramel with banana cream on a light chocolate sourdough, and the crème brûlée with velvety Tongan vanilla custard. However – the best one is probably the sea salt caramel and banana doughnut.
If it comes to the most stunning restaurant in the World Figueria Rubayat is a contender – for sure. And yes the food is amazing too. What do they serve? Steak of course. This is a restaurant where you get to eat outdoors, indoors! The dining room is built around an enormous fig tree and huge branches have been glassed in. Pretty cool.
If you want cool, comfortable and delicious – Industry Standard in Berlin (Neukölln of course) is hard to beat. The cooks are from Canada and Mexico, the menu is always changing and the tartare and the chicory with stilton to die for.
Cordobar is this small place in Berlin Mitte. Cordobar collecting accolades like other people stamps. Cordoba might just be the hottest restaurant in Germany and the blood sausage pie the best dish. The name? It is derived from Austrias only win in a football world cup against the mighty Germans. 1978 in … of course Cordoba(r). The giveaway is the toilet “music” – the original commentary from back in 1978 – I wärd närrisch”.
The food is exceptional, the wine remarkable and the prices make the evening even more fun. Go to Cordobar
People in Sao Paulo take their coffee very seriously. The best of the mall is the Coffee Lab created by Isabella Raposeiras.
The cafe is split up into indoor and outdoor seating. Towards the back of the cafe is an open kitchen furnished with an espresso bar, tools of the trade, and minimal kitchen appliances with staff dressed in mechanic inspired onesies working away. The front of the cafe is equipped with the industry’s best Diedrich coffee roasters since Coffee Lab roasts its own beans and creates its very own unique blends. Beans are also sold for retail in individual packages in store.
The menu is essentially an educational coffee booklet consisting of a variety of in house coffee blends with four main brewing methods including aeropress, pour over, french press and clever. Hot and cold espresso beverages, food, and desserts are also available. The most interesting part of the menu is the “Coffee Rituals” which pretty much schools you in coffee. Each ritual is essentially a lesson on coffee such as “compare the coffee Brazilians drink every day with one of our specialty coffees” or “enjoy the same coffee prepared with an Aeropress and a French Press.”
For a short course on coffee, order Ritual 13, a “Rare Brazilian micro-lot tasting” which involves an in depth tasting and analysis of coffee served in wine glasses perfect for coffee nerds.
It’s always more than a little suspicious when a company claims they do produce the best in the world. It is one thing if it’s a New York deli saying it has the best coffee in the world. The credibility of that claim is pretty low. But if a commercial franchise chain with the ambition to conquer the world says it has the best burger in the world and makes it part of the companies promise – this is pretty bold. Well, Madero does exactly this.
The brasilian burger chain with outlets as far away as Miami is bold. Super bold. But surprise surprise – they deliver. As Trendengel’s favourite In N out Burger Madero promises not to use anything out of a can. They bothe have a few things in common. But it stops with the meat, The Madero meat is out of this world. This is what flame grilled should taste like (sorry Burger King). The bun is the other surprise. What looks like a dry roll is the perfect alternative to the brioche or the old school hamburger bun. Well, what can I sa: last it if you have the chance.
