Industry Standard – Berlin is Setting the Standard

Industry-Standard-Berlin-Venue-620x350Berlin does not have to hide behind London, Paris and New York when it comes to innovative food. Industry Standard in the middle of Neukölln is a good example.  This is what they say about themselves:

We believe in giving whole beasts their due, and that extends not only to offal and off-cuts, the high-lights and low-lights of the flesh, but to the radishes and rutabagas that went into making them. We want to extend this philosophy into everything on offer at Industry Standard: From the inspired witchery of our house-made bitters to our selection of natural and biodynamic wines (curated by Viniculture) that express the soil and sea, the sky and the sweat that fed them. Forgotten or unexpected connections. Whole beasts, some of which, admittedly, may be mythical.

We think that “comfort food” is a played-out conceit signaling compromise more than any attempt to really connect. Food can be challenging as well as comforting – comforting because it is just goddamn delicious.

Industry-Standard-Berlin-Beef-TartarSo for drinking, fighting, feasting, lusting, larding and barding, reverent riffs on deserved classics, come to Neukölln. We will feed you.

Well  – this is what TrendEngel says: This is one of the most surprising discoveries of the year. The tartar is extraordinary and very very special and the cauliflower to die for.

Clove Club – British at its Best

CloveClub-e13625167611204-247x175It can sometimes be hard to know if a restaurant is trying to make food that you will savour and enjoy, or is simply creating dishes to feed the Instagram craze. Taking no chances, Shoreditch’s Clove Club is doing both.

The Clove Club, London EC1The Clove Club’s menu is a masterpiece of contemporary aspirations. With a no-choice list of nine courses, there’s no possibility of a fashion faux pas when ordering. This daily-changing menu is economically worded. It describes a succession of small plates: dishes which are seasonal, that champion British produce, yet are oddly esoteric. It is both accessible and obscurantist.

buttermilk-chicken-and-pine-salt1Everything comes together in the amazing building of Shoreditch town hall. Food to dream about long after you left – especially the heavenly buttermilk chicken and pine salt.

City Of Angels – The Theater event of the New Year – Play of The Year

city-of-angelsLondon is the epicenter of the theater world and the Donmar Warehouse is probably the most consistent and important theater of the West End.  Now City of Angels is dazzling critics and theater goers alike. So much fun and worth the trip to London.

Two decades after its London premier, Donmar artistic director Josie Rourke revives one of the acknowledged greats of twentieth century musical theatre.

Hollywood comes calling for a New York novelist. The offer is too good to refuse: adapt the private detective protagonist of his books into a big-screen hero. The siren song of Los Angeles is a dangerous temptation and while his movie plays out in black and white, his new life is all-too colourful.
