Lili K. – She Could Be the Next Amy Winehouse

0004380207_10These comparisons are easily drawn and mostly wrong. The next Amy Winehouse – we read that hundreds of times. But this time…just maybe we have something special. Lili K is from Chicago, and if you’re any kind of local music fan in Chicago, you’ve heard Lili K.’s voice. You just might not have realized it. The wispy melodies backing up Chance The Rapper on his Acid Rap smash “Pusha Man.” The soulful temptress singing harmony on Vic Mensa’s “Hollywood.” The jazz cover of Disclosure’s “Latch” with vocals well beyond the owner’s years that floated around the Internet late last year. It’s all Lili.
Ruby is the name of the local singer’s forthcoming album and it leaves no question as to where her true musical allegiances lie. Lili embodies a classic jazz singer with her voice and emulates the golden age of Motown and soul with her style. She’s as refreshing and wholesome as the television sitcoms we associate with the same era. The video for (not to mention the sound of) “Tommy,” Ruby’s lead single, is a throwback in more ways than one.

Here is the lead single:

Kim Gordon – Girl in a Band

ad7064a7Kim Gordon might easily be the most important woman in rock and pop .Often described as aloof, Kim Gordon truly opens up in Girl in a Band. Telling the story of her childhood, her life in art, her move to New York City, her love affairs, her marriage, her relationship with her daughter, and her band, this is a rich and beautifully written memoir. At the heart of the book is the examination of what partnership means—and what happens when it dissolves. An atmospheric look at the New York of the 80s and 90s that gave rise to Sonic Youth, as well as the Alternative revolution in popular music that Sonic Youth helped usher in, paving the way for Nirvana, Hole, Smashing Pumpkins and many other acts. One of the most revered people in modern rock and roll, Kim Gordon is also a highly regarded fashion icon, visual artist, and the source of much fascination.

TOPS – Montreal at its Best Picture You Staring

tops11_rebeccastorm_web-1024x678TOPS are a four-piece band from Montreal, equal parts girls and guys, delivering a raw punk take on AM studio pop. Their new record, Picture You Staring, is a lush array of timelessly crafted songs.

Picture You Staring gathers strength through intimacy. Self-written, recorded, produced, and the result of 12 months holed up in Arbutus Records’ Montreal warehouse. This album contains 12 impeccable examples of pop craftsmanship that will reward repeat listeners. This has still not been properly discovered. It’s about time.

Yak – Smile – Nick Cave Reborn

Yak-Emma-Swann-18“I never said romance was dead”, Yak frontman Oli Burslem booms, channelling his inner Nick Cave over a sleazy guitar riff that’s positively dripping with darkness. This track, from the London-based trio’s forthcoming ‘Plastic People’ EP, clamps a vice-like grip on the temples and will leave your eyes bloodshot. Explosive and magnetic, it’s the kind of song reputations are built on. Smile is a great song and deserves your attention

The song is not on youtube yet – total grass roots. Here is the link to Soundcloud

Top 4 New Bands at SXSW 2015

This is it. This is the best band that played at SXSW- TrendEngel even saw them twice in a row. And by the way the drummer played with one hand as the other one was broken. Real men…

Nr.1: Viet Cong

Viet-Cong
Like many burgeoning buzz bands, a story follows Viet Cong wherever they go. In this case, it’s that of former Calgary band Women, and the unexpected death of guitarist Christopher Reimer in 2012, two years after they disbanded. Both Flegel and Viet Cong drummer Mike Wallace played in Women, and after enlisting Munro and Danny Christiansen, a new band was formed from the ashes. And they are amazing. Just amazing. One of the best bands Trendengel has heard in years.

Another gem from SXSW and the runner up of the  whole show…

Nr. 2: Amason

They are Swedish, they are really great musicians, they are likable and lots of fun and Amanda Bergman has this special something that keeps you glued to the stage.

Austin has left TrendEngel very happy. Now we want to make you happy. Her is our

Nr.3: Jack Garratt

jack_garratt_20140603_1024x686He is a successful producer -but seeing him live makes you realize that there is more to Jack Garratt. At one point he was triggering drum samples with a stick in his right hand, playing keyboards with his left and keeping a guitar around his neck in case of emergencies. All he needed was a pair of cymbals between his knees and a kazoo.

Austin South By South West is behind us and TrendEngel watched close to 100 shows for you. These are the most exciting performers and very likely the next big thing and more importantly just a lot of fun.

Nr. 4: SOAK
SOAK_2841628b
SOAK, born Bridie Monds-Watson, is a 17-year-old multi-instrumentalist who has been drawing comparisons to Cat Power with oblique narratives of adolescence and gently raw vocals. Scottish band CHVRCHES have signed her up to their label, Goodbye Records
