TrendEngel readers know about this guy for a while. Now – finally his stardom is up us. Over the years, the surest predictor of commercial success in the music industry has been the title of Brits critics’ choice award-winner (hello Adele and Sam Smith). This time, the anointed recipient of more streams, sales and sold-out shows than the rest of his contemporaries combined is the 24-year-old artist, producer and songwriter Jack Garratt.
Garratt’s stock in trade is the heartfelt ballad, not dissimilar to last year’s winner, James Bay, but with an electronic treatment that makes him sound like an attempt to bring James Blake’s gauzy experimental music into the mainstream. Listen to Worry from the Berlin Sessions and you know why we are so excited.
Fews are a Swedish/American four-piece whose debut single was an eight-minute blur of motorik boogie, like something out of early-70s Detroit via early-70s Düsseldorf. It was produced by Dan Carey, who has worked with Toy, Warpaint and Bat For Lashes, and was released on Speedy Wunderground. Now signed to Play it Again Sam, and their latest single is a more concise example of what can be achieved with a linear groove and a sense of mantric repetition. It goes on for three and a half minutes but you could imagine enjoying 33 minutes of it, such is the hypnotic effect of the propulsive drums and two-note guitar pattern.
The label I OH YOU has some pretty exciting talent on its ever expanding roster, but none might be more interesting and diverse than newcomer MOSSY. Since signing with the label, the Sydney solo act has announced the release date of his forthcoming self-titled debut EP (May 13th), and shared its lead single “Electric Chair” along with a visual accompaniment. “Electric Chair” is a bodacious entrance into the music world, full of swirling, static-lined synths and purposeful percussive movements lead by MOSSY’s equally pulsating, dynamic and unique vocals. TrendEngel can’t wait to see MOSSY in Brighton at the Great Escape in Mid May. MOSSY – we salute you.
Notorious for smashing Coldplay’s table at the NME Awards, Bring Me The Horizon have more to offer. The band won the NME Innovation award 2016 This is what NME had to say about it: “Their live shows are absolutely mind-blowing and as a band, they have an incredible amount of creative energy. This sees them innovate time and time again, crossing over from the metal world into the mainstream whilst retaining what made them great in the first place.”
TrEndengel is not quiet sure what to make of all the fuzz and buzz – but be your own judge. Tis is for sure a great song:
All My Demons Greeting Me As A Friend the first album of norvegian songstress Aurora will be out March 11. TrendEngel can’t stress enough how magical she is and how beautiful the sound of her voice makes you feel. Get to know her:
If you get the chance to see Aurora live – no matter how far you have to travel. pls. do so. You want to know why? listen to this:
The phrase ‘modern psychedelia’ often feels like an oxymoron, but on Human Ceremony Sunflower Bean make perfect sense of it, rewardingly broadening their musical horizons in the process and as with the Nuggets compilations it’s as diverse as you like yet retains a marvellous cohesion at the same time. TrendEngel will have the pleasure to see the band live in Berlin in a weeks time in legendary Kantine am Berghain – we will keep you posted – are they the saviors of rocknroll?
It isn’t often that you hear of a pop star on the rise who is simultaneously pursuing a career in the spotlight and a master’s degree in philosophy from the Sorbonne, and yet Petite Meller is doing exactly that. Ambiguous in age and willfully obtuse when you try and pry, here is a Londoner (via Paris and New York), who is equal parts afro-electro chanteuse and psychoanalytic, post-structural Dionysian. Add the Godard inspired music videos, like recent single “Backpack,” plus a Lolita aesthetic to the mix, and the result is both painfully chic, and almost unbearably French. Her album will drop soon and the latest single is pretty damn good. Possibly better than Gaga. Pop at its best:
New York rock searchers Yeasayer haven’t released a new album since 2012’s Fragrant World, but they have now broken their silence. Last month, the band started posting mysterious teasers for what sure seems to be a new album, possibly titled Amen & Goodbye. And now, a new single called “I Am Chemistry” has appeared. The song is a churning groove that packs a whole lot into its five minutes: A percussive rhythmic base, a proggy synth excursion, and what sounds like a children’s choir singing over a florid piano. Listen to the song below. The album will be out in April.
This goes to a Swedish band called Amason – some kind of Swedish super group (yes, the bloke is from Dungen). The song is called Duvan – so beautiful. A special acoustic version on the sofa:
