Torchy Tacos – Possibly the Best Mexican Food in the USA

roadside-buildingsChioco Design recently completed a new taco restaurant that pays homage to the colorful roadside buildings popular throughout the 1950s. While many restaurants aim to make their establishment appear completely modern, this diner combines retro elements with contemporary designs for a nostalgia-inducing experience.

DSC_0057The new branch of Torchy’s Tacos is located in Austin, Texas, and it sits on the old site of 1970s burger chain Fran’s Hamburgers. The new building boasts a retro exterior that is inspired by the roadside buildings and colorful signage popular during the 1950s. The restaurant’s unique zig-zag profile and distinctive red columns make the establishment eye-catching and inviting to those passing by. As a result, the combination of contemporary features and 1950s-inspired designs provides a whole new dining experience for guests.

CdSsT7iVAAAA-HFThe Taco’s ar so good that US-President Barack Obama couldn’t resist stopping by torches last week when he was in town for this years SXSW Festival. Do you need any more convincing to visit the coolest town west of New York City and wast of Los Angeles?

Anomalisia – Charlie Kaufmann Is the Puppet Master

1401x788-068-ANOMALISA-008RAnomalisa marks another brilliant and utterly distinctive highlight in Charlie Kaufman’s filmography, and a thought-provoking treat for fans of introspective cinema. It is hard to imagine that 2016 will bring us a better film than Anomalisa. This is a breakthrough movie in any way imaginative. Hard to justify the fact that Anomalisa was overlooked at the Oscar‘s but hey – I guess the Academy isn’t known for awarding the highest honor to the outsiders…

Vogue 100: A Century of Style – National Portrait Gallery

UnknownFashion may be fickle, but the fashion photographer’s lens is also a mirror. ‘Vogue 100: A Century of Style’ is as much a reflection of a hundred years of our history as it is a celebration of the original glossy.

BRITISHVOGUE100EXHIBITIONBorn in 1916 during WWI, when shipping the US magazine became impossible, British Vogue has always been more than a fashion mag. And this exhibition is so much more than a collection of pretty models in pretty clothes – JG Ballard and Aldous Huxley have both written for Vogue. A pre-fatwa Salmon Rushdie has shared an issue with John Galliano, years before the latter’s fall from grace. Both Queen Elizabeth and her boozy mum have appeared. And, of course, most of the century’s best photographers have shot for its pages.

vogue_3432347bIn this thoughtfully arranged show, at the National Portrait Museum in London it’s the little details that make the difference – from the cocktail style menu of credits in the 1930s room to the wall of seemingly disparate portraits of actress Helena Bonham Carter, milliner Stephen Jones and model Ben Grimes-Viort – united by a colour scheme of feathery pink. A side room shows a series of slides from the ’40s to the ’90s; as though you’re in the cutting room, you watch images go from picture to page.

Design Studio – We Love Eames Is so Creative

contemporary-lighting_100316_01-e1457622662977 contemporary-lighting_100316_02Emilia Lucht and Arne Sebrantke are the German design studio We Love Eames. They wanted to create a lamp that would allow greenery to grow in windowless spaces. The lights are a completely self-sustaining ecosystem, where they claim the plants can grow undisturbed for years.

lamp_100316_02It’s a revolutionary lighting solution not just because the luminaire is a completely self-sustaining ecosystem where the plants can grow-undisturbed, but also because of its one-of-a-kind electrically conductive glass coating. It actually streams the electricity invisibly along the surface, so there’s no need for a cable connection between the power source and the LED. Bring even windowless spaces to life with a plantlight!

Car Seat Headrest – Teens of Style – Best Album of The Decade?

0005951484_10Will Toledo: a name (part pseudonym) that you’re unlikely to be familiar with unless you’re from the small town of Leesburg, Virginia, where Toledo has been recording music at a staggering rate for years from the confines of his bedroom. Released via Bandcamp at giveaway prices (mostly decided by the buyers themselves), he’s clocked up a breathtaking 11 albums in the five years or so since he began at the age of 17.
Anyone new to Car Seat Headrest is, quite frankly, in for a jaw-dropping discovery. The quality of Toledo’s songs is gobsmacking; the lyrics are enthralling, the melodies are to die for, the musicianship is raw yet brilliant. OK, Teens Of Style is a compilation, in some ways a best of – although fans would be quick to introduce you to other tracks that are held in even higher esteem – but it serves as a perfect introduction. Toledo is an introvert; it was always the intention to gain a wider audience, but how he will handle the inevitable clamour coming his way is a little concerning. He is, undeniably, a 24-carat genius and Car Seat Headrest are utterly brilliant. The album was released at the end of last year but hurry as the next gem is already around the corner. The  first proper studio effort – Teens Of Denial – is due soon and will for sure be off to a flyer too.The first song Vincent shows you what to expect. F****** amazing.

Patisserie Du Bonheur – Berlin beats Paris

dubinheureI challenge anyone o find me a better Patisserie than Berlin’s Du Bonheur in beautiful Paris. This is a task that is almost impossible. Take the Cannelé, possibly the best sweet ever invented. This is everything a Cannelé should be and more and event beats the Cannel at London’s the Wolseley. The outside made up of a maximum caramelized, crunchy, sticky surface. And the inside, solid custard, flecked with black vanilla seeds, yielding. It’s a creme caramel you can hold in your hand, improved by texture, beveled edges, sharp ridges – pockets of bliss.
stilinberlin-du-bonheur-2-905x603Du Bonheur on Brunnenstr. 39 in ever so trendy Mitte for sure is worth the plain ticket to Berlin – By the way: The macarons are almost as good as the ones produced by Pierre Hermé

The People Vs OJ Simpson – How Can It Be So Good?

17CRIMESTORY-master675The People v OJ Simpson, the first iteration of American Crime Story, the new anthology from Ryan Murphy, creator of American Horror Story, Glee and Scream Queens, doesn’t immediately hurl itself into the full frenzy of the OJ case. Exercising uncharacteristic restraint, Murphy — who merely produced and directs from a script by Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski — deftly depicts the relative calm before the eventual storm.

What he’s showing us is the beginning of the America we’re stuck with today. He’s showing us a world where Marcia Clark’s case was undermined by the constant media preoccupation with what she wore to court and how uptight she came across and why she couldn’t find a decent hair stylist.

A world where OJ’s blank beach bum houseguest Kato Kaelin became both a punchline and an instant celebrity. A world where Nicole Brown’s friend Faye Resnick parlayed her witness box exposure into a tell-all book and a Playboy cover. A world where Johnnie Cochrane used America’s racial divide to reshape the narrative of the case.
Funny enough – this is one of the greatest moments of American history. You don’t believe it? Watch The People Vs. OJ Simpson starring John Travolta and Cuba Gooding Jr among others – a stellar cast.

Jack Garratt – Finally His Breakthrough Is Upon Us

Screen-Shot-2015-07-03-at-20.09.472-650x420TrendEngel readers know about this guy for a while. Now – finally his stardom is up us. Over the years, the surest predictor of commercial success in the music industry has been the title of Brits critics’ choice award-winner (hello Adele and Sam Smith). This time, the anointed recipient of more streams, sales and sold-out shows than the rest of his contemporaries combined is the 24-year-old artist, producer and songwriter Jack Garratt.

Garratt’s stock in trade is the heartfelt ballad, not dissimilar to last year’s winner, James Bay, but with an electronic treatment that makes him sound like an attempt to bring James Blake’s gauzy experimental music into the mainstream. Listen to Worry from the Berlin Sessions and you know why we are so excited.
